Logistical Nightmare
A week before the show
The concert starts at 8pm. When shall we head into Boston?
Let's go at 6 so we're not rushed.
Ok
2 days before the show
Do you want to catch dinner before the show?
Sure.
Do you want to eat in Concord before we drive in or in Boston?
It would be nice to eat in Boston.
Ok. Where?
I don't know.
What time would we have to go to have time to eat?
Probably no later than 5.
Sounds early.
Yeah
Let's think about it.
1 day before the show
Let's eat in Concord. It'll be easier.
Yeah. We don't know where to eat around Symphony Hall.
And it will take too long
What time should we eat?
5?
Yeah.
Where?
Walden Grill? Helen's?
How about Commellias?
Sounds good and they're fast.
I'll email everyone else and tell them 5 at Commellias.
Oik
Day of the Show
Steve doesn't like Commellas.
Too bad. Tell him he'll have to suck it up. We;ve already decided.
Yeah.
Day of the Show
Do you want me to pick you up on the way?
Yeah, what time?
How about 4:50?
Yeah sounds good.
This is just a common thread of conversation/email/texting that goes on in my life almost every week; sometimes more than once during any given week. My life is played out in logistics.
First, because I am a realtor I am always having to work out appointments when customers can go see houses. Tuesday at 3? Saturday at 10? Often I have to make 5 or 6 appointments so we can visit lots of houses on the Day Devoted to Real Estate. And, then, the customers often have to change the appointment. The kid got sick; they forgot about soccer practice; someone died. So after setting up 6 appointments with 6 different realtors imposing on 6 homeowners, I have to call back and cancel all 6 and reschedule them for another 6 times. Logistics!
My personal life is also full of logistics. See above thread of conversation. I am forever meeting friends for dinner, movies, museum outings, shows. The amount of time I have to spend on figuring out where and when is mind boggling. Technology has not helped. Instead of one or two phone conversations to figure it all out, we can text or email at whim over days and days.
Now I'm not complaining. I like my job and I like my friends. But recently I was texting two different people back and forth and back and forth trying to set up 1) a lunch at my house with 2 friends that got postponed twice due to snow and 2) a longstanding monthly sushi lunch with a fellow Realtor. I finally put down my phone having successfully set up both luncheons. Then I realized that I had set them both for the same day!!! Somehow in working out the logistics that would work for both my 2 friends and my colleague, I had placed myself eating lunch at two places at once! Logistical nightmare!
Real Estate Hint - Don't always follow the market. There are times as a Seller that you should do something different. Although January is early for the spring market, if you list your house now instead of waiting for the spring market in late February you may beat the majority of listings that will come on in season and be one of a few houses that early buyers will see and purchase. Inventory is low in January - beat the rush!
