The Nook

Prior to my 10 day trip to St. Thomas I bought myself a birthday present - Barnes and Noble's The  Nook.   I had chosen it over the Kindle primarily because my friend and traveling companion had purchased one and was very happy with it.  Second, I had very recently read a Boston Globe review of the Nook, the Kindle and the Ipad where the author praised the Nook over the other 2 ereaders.  I had also looked online at the list of titles available for the Nook so I knew I would be able to find books that I wanted to read.

I purchased the Nook and a cover (necessary to protect the machine) online and naturally received it in about 48 hours (so amazing!).

I then went on my computer to  set up an account with B&N so that I could order books. I chose 3 books that I would enjoy reading on vacation and put them into my checkout cart.

After I had charged the machine for at least 12 hours the next thing the instructions told me to do was register it.  This consisted of typing in my email and password that I had used to register with B&N on my laptop.  Unfortunately, the touch screen on the Nook was so sensitive that it took me a very frustrating hour to finally type both my email and password into my Nook.  I almost called the telephone help line to yell at someone about my difficulty with typing two simple lines, but after a break to calm my nerves I tried a slightly different "tap" and was able to enter the information.

I then went to my computer (although I could have done this directly on the Nook but was too upset with the touchscreen to try) and purchased the 3 books that were in my shopping cart.  By inputting my visa card data into my registration I can order books anywhere, any time.

B&N automatically sent my 3 books to my Nook and it was no problem at all to see that indeed they sat in "My Library". I easily chose the first book I wanted to read and there it was - page one -ready, set, go!!!

The reading screen on the Nook is very clear.  You have some flexibility on the size of the font.  Turning the page is easy.  You just tap an arrow on either side of the screen and it moves to the next or previous page.  There is also a way to swipe your finger across the little screen at the bottom of the machine to turn the pages but I haven't mastered that yet; I am content with the arrows.

I read the Nook on the plane, on the beach, in bed...  I loved it!  It worked like a charm!  I recharged the machine every couple of days so I wouldn't run out of "juice" when I wanted to read.  So don't forget your cable when you pack!!  I especially love that every time you pick up the Nook it shows you the page that you left off on.

I bought the Nook primarily for traveling, but i will probably use it if I want to purchase a new book quickly.  Also I am contemplating moving from a daily delivery of the Boston Globe newspaper and going digital.  But, I'm not there yet...one step forward in technology at a time.

P.S. I downloaded a new book diirectly from The Nook today while sitting on my living room couch!  It really does work!!!!

Real Estate Hint - One of the most important assets that real estate brokers bring to a transaction is their knowledge of current laws.  My company, real estate board and local and national real estate associations email me updates on legal matters pertaining to real estate quite frequently.  Whether it be the rules concerning the new type of smoke detectors mandated in Massachusetts or laws about removal of lead paint,  I learn about laws that can affect real estate sales which allows me to advise my clients so they don't get into trouble.  If you try to sell your house without a realtor, beware - you may not know the law!!!!
