The Hard Work of Inspiration
Inspiration for fiction writing, from whence does it come? For each writer, the answer may be different. For me, thoughts usually pop into my head which are rooted to some type of reality. One time while I was sitting at a red light, a person walked past and immediately a sentence formed in my mind describing her walk: She walked as though with each step she was carving her existence from the earth. I haven't yet conjured a character for which I can use this sentence, but it's locked away up top for future use.
That's the problem: Unbidden inspiration floats to my consciousness for which I have no immediate use. If I'm near paper, I write them down. That leads to another problem: There are scraps of paper and half-used notebooks all over my house with snippets of ideas. How to organize all that inspiration for later usage? On my computer are essays I've begun, but lost interest in or ideas for and abandoned. Years ago I started writing a book about a book club I was in with other military wives. There was such a lively mix of personalities and breadth of experience among the members, it would have been a best seller if I would've stuck with it past the third page.
Inspiration is the easy part. Organizing it is the stumbling block that keeps me from completing creative projects. Writing is really hard work.
