REAL LIFE AND REAL ESTATE
I had a terrific English teacher in 10th grade, Mr. Sarff. We had to write a creative short story for his class. A week after the due date, Mr. Sarff approached me in the hallway, "Your story was terrific! I think you should try to get it published in a magazine. I will help you." I was thrilled! I did send off the story to a couple of magazines and at 15 received my first rejection letters. I was on my way!
In college I took only one creative writing class. I wrote an end-of-term piece which I had to meet alone with the professor for his critique. After some small talk, he leaned across his desk and and said, "I really liked your story. I think you should try to get it published." Again, a respected teacher liked my writing. Just like in high school! But it was summer and I had a boyfriend and, well, I never did send the story out to publishers.
Not to sound like a cliché but thirty years went by filled with the standard single mother's lament of lack of time to do anything the least bit creative. And then one day my son went off to college! Now I could finally write a book and get it published. But, what book? Write about what you know - isn't that the mantra? I could write about selling Real Estate - hey, I had been doing just that for 14 years and make a nice living from it! So I began.
Always the optimist, after writing a few chapters, I signed up for a course entitled, "How to Get Your Book Published" at my local high school. The course led to a writing group. And, the writing group led to this blog. Hopefully this blog will lead to a Book Tour. Oh yeah, I first have to finish the book...
Real Estate Hint #1
When cleaning your house to get ready to go on the Market, start to pack your books, knick knacks, extra clothes, etc. in moving boxes and store the boxes in the basement or garage. It is important to show an uncluttered home. Do not be concerned if the basement or garage are filled with boxes; the prospective buyers assume you are packing to move! And, nobody will fault you for a messy basement or garage; just keep the house neat!!
